Flags

Furled flags draw little notice,
offer scant hint of what they symbolize,
are easily set aside for some more
auspicious moment.
Unfurled, flags dance on the breeze,
brashly flaunt their crests and colors
to all who pass by,
crack unapologetically
in the wind.

Flags unfurled resist being laid aside,
are given to spilling beyond
their assigned spaces.
Flags are made to be unfurled
and flown,
to snap in the wind
as halyards clap against the mast
their very presence
proclamation.
